White Mountain Youth Voices recently hosted the North Country Chamber Players’ woodwind quintet for a performance workshop. The young singers enjoyed front row seats as the quintet performed several short pieces. The Youth Voices presented a setting of Robert Frost’s “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” with the original flute and piano accompaniment. The Youth Voices then enjoyed a challenge to sing parts of the piece using different vocal qualities to match the different tones as the various woodwinds played in place of the flute.
There was an opportunity for a wide-ranging discussion and questions from the Youth Voices to the musicians. Topics included building performance confidence, the use of various clefs in musical notation, breath control, and how much practice the musicians required at various points in their careers. White Mountain Youth Voices is very grateful for this collaboration with world-class musicians.
